Hostas –

Hostas or Plantain lilies are perennials they are easy to grow long lived and are one of the favorite among garden lovers. Hostas have lush foliage and are quiet easy to grow and can be implemented in any low maintenance gardens.

Although Hosta plants are shade loving many variegates need good sun light to exhibit their combined colors. You can always follow this – If the foliage is lighter it is sun loving and if the foliage is dark in color it needs semi shade or moderate shade. Foliage texture can be smooth, curved, rippled and glossy.

Hostas need a well drained, fertilized moist soil and if these requirements are met Hostas are really a ideal foliage plant in your garden. Hostas are known for its striking colors – they range from white, deep blue, yellow, lavender, dark green and many more. Some varieties are fragrant. Flowers are white, blue and yellow and some are scented. Hostas are prized for its colorful leaves. Hostas come in various colors, shape and size. There are more than 40 varieties used in landscaping.

Hostas can be grown under tall trees, in borders and as ground cover. You can fertilize once a year. With consistent moisture they can be more vigorous.

Once established Hostas are quiet rough and once established they can tolerate any soil type and can be in your garden for years and you can  find them a welcome addition in your garden.

Propagation through seeds and division. The only problem is with slugs which leaves slight holes on the foliage.
